Olwen Pendennis
In Monica Hughes’ novel, the Keeper of the Isis Light, in my opinion, the most interesting and engaging character is Olwen Pendennis. At the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to a girl called Olwen Pendennis. We first meet her when she was scrambling up the rocky eastern face of the lighthouse. Olwen is the main character in the novel. Olwen plays a significant role in the novel as she is the keeper of the isis light and it's her job to report back to earth daily. She lives with guardian who takes care of her and protects her. She has green scaly skin with green eyes and ginger hair. Her role is so significant because she has the main role in the novel and daily reports back to earth are essential for people on earth to get an understanding of life on the Planet Isis. The quote ‘a personal report from herself, Olwen Pendennis.’ From page 4 uses vocabulary to show the importance of the role to the reader. Olwen Pendennis is my favourite character from the novel because she is the main focus of the novel and she is so strong-willed and independent.
Colonization
Human colonization on the planet isis causes a major issue in the novel the keeper of the isis light. The colonization on isis greatly affects Olwen because she is not used to having to live with many other people because of only having to live with guardian. It also affected her because the people who colonized were afraid of her and didn’t accept her. It also affected Mark, one of the people from the colonization. In the novel, The Keeper Of The Isis Light Monica Hughes highlights the seriousness of the issues of the colonization when Mark gets seriously injured from seeing Olwen's true form and getting scared which led him to fall down a cliff this is quoted on page 100 when it says: ‘Mark staggered to his feet and took one involuntary step. There was nothing there.’ Colonization is by far the main issue in the novel.
The Mesa Top Adventures
A 3-day adventure on the mesa top.
1st day; meet at the middle of camp at 7 am for breakfast. From 8 am to 10 am you will be taught how to survive these dangerous yet beautiful and wonderful 3 days. From 10 am to 12:30 pm meeting Olwen and personal glider driving lessons from her. From 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm lunch. 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm pack up camp. 2:30 pm to 7 pm mesa tours with isis 7 pm to 8 pm relocate camp halfway across the mesa. 8 pm to 10 pm is free time. 10 pm is time to go back to the tents for the night.
2nd day; 7 am meet for breakfast. 8 am to 12:30 pm Olwen will tell you all about isis and life on isis. 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm lunch. 1:30 to 7 pm activities. 7 pm to 10 pm free time. 10 pm is tents for the night.
3rd day; 7 am to 9 am breakfast. 9 am to 10 am pack up camp. 10 am to 12: 30 pm explore the mesa top. 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm lunch. 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm free time. 4:30 pm to 6 pm pack and board space ship. 6 pm set off back to earth.
When walking the breathtaking hike over the mesa top listen to all the beautiful sounds and all of our surroundings to take in the beauty of the planet isis.
